Kylie Banyard’s 'Saskia' began with a photograph she took of one of her students during an art class. From this simple beginning, Banyard has created an intriguing image that conveys the joy and possibilities of the creative act. The flashes of colour that surround the subject draw us as viewers into Saskia’s world. The combination of figuration and abstraction, together with the figure’s outstretched arm, convey a sense of purpose and conviction, and the meaningful contribution that art can make to our lives. Banyard made an oil monotype (a one-off impression from a painted image) from the photograph of Saskia, using the expressive nature of this approach as the impetus for this print.
